Last month we blogged about Microsoft Office 365 for Business and answered some of the most common questions we see with clients evaluating the solution for their business. So this week we wanted to follow that up and talk about Microsoft 365 and how it’s different from Office 365.
Microsoft 365 was announced last summer at Microsoft’s Inspire Partner conference. In Microsoft’s words, 365 “represents a fundamental shift in how we will design, build, and go to market to address our customers’ needs for a modern workplace.”
Office 365 is the suite of Microsoft applications like Word, Powerpoint, Excel and others depending on the office plan you have. Microsoft 365 is the new solution bringing together the Office 365 Suite, Windows 10 and Enterprise Mobility and Security. Microsoft 365 has been split into two different solutions – Microsoft 365 Business and Microsoft 365 Enterprise.
Microsoft 365 Business
This solution was designed for small-medium sized businesses, with the ability to support up to 300 users. This solution includes:
- Office applications
- File and document viewing and editing
- Collaboration services
- Business applications
- Device Management
The device management and security are what really set this apart from Office 365. The device management capabilities allow for a single console to manage user and device settings, the ability to automatically deploy office applications to Windows 10 devices, and use Windows Autopilot for self service PC deployment.
The security features protects Windows 10 devices against viruses, malware and spyware using Windows Defender, provide secure access to documents on mobile devices and protect company data across devices.
Microsoft 365 Business also introduced 3 new applications:
- Microsoft Connections – for email marketing
- Microsoft Listings – to publish business information on top sites
- Microsoft Invoicing – to create professional invoices
Microsoft 365 Enterprise
This solution is for large organizations and integrates Office 365 Enterprise, Windows 10 Enterprise and Enterprise Mobility and Security. 365 Enterprise includes:
- Office applications
- Email and calendar
- Chat-based workspace
- Voice, video and meetings
- Social and intranet
- Threat Protection
- Identity and access management
- Device and app management
- Information protection
- Advanced compliance
For the bullet points in bold, there are two different levels of Microsoft 365 Enterprise, E3 and E5, and these specific capabilities vary depending on the level you choose. To find out more information on how the two differ check out the Microsoft 365 Enterprise page.
For each of these solutions there are some prerequisites when it comes to implementation, so if you’re thinking about making the switch and aren’t quite sure how to go about it, give us a call! We are a Microsoft partner and have experience with the whole implementation process.
